News from Steve

Dear Copper Mesa Community,

I admit it, I have been a fair-weather fan of the Broncos!! I know, I shouldn’t be that way, but gosh, they play ok one week and then the next - ugg!!

Our PRIDE Skill next week: Self-Advocacy

This week I will mention the following:

  • Look for the Good Project

  • Choir

  • iReady Mid-Year Diagnostic

  • Writing

LOOK FOR THE GOOD PROJECT

We have had students place so many Post-it notes on our Gratitude Wall that we have had to create another one and that one is already getting filled up. I have just loved seeing students placing and reading the Post-it notes on the wall. We have such thoughtful students and many staff members have placed notes on the walls too. I encourage you to check out the Gratitude Walls if you are ever in our school. Our amazing SLC kiddos have also been sharing messages each day about Gratitude during morning announcements! It has also been so cool to observe students step on one of our Gratitude dots and share about being grateful!!

CHOIR

This morning I was meeting with a teacher and I could hear our choir practicing for their upcoming winter/holiday concert. Wow, they were amazing. We have such talented students, not just in math and reading but their singing abilities are top notch. Thank you to Ms. Muller for working so hard to foster the love of singing with our choir students. I look forward to the choir concert happening soon.

iREADY MID YEAR DIAGNOSTIC

Speaking of math and reading, our students have been busy completing their mid-year iReady diagnostic assessments. A student recently shared with me her score and the percentage of increase she made from the beginning of the year diagnostic. It was very evident that she was extremely proud of her scores. Our teachers do an outstanding job of sharing scores with their students as well as creating goals. iReady scores will be sent home next Thursday, December 14th. Please reach out to your kiddo(s) teachers with any questions.

WRITING

I have to mention writing as well this week. The reason is that Ms. Laviaguerre and I have been observing our teachers teach writing. Both of us have been so impressed with the quality of writing instruction we have been observing and the students writing. We are focusing on writing as our CMAS scores last year were not where we wanted them and I just know our scores will be much stronger this year. Our students understand the rubrics that are used to score their writing and set the next steps. They have also loved to share their writing with their classmates. Writing is a difficult concept to teach, and I tip my hat to our teachers who are so passionate about our students becoming stronger writers!!

Well, it looks like there is some snow in the forecast tomorrow so bundle up!!

SSN PROJECT -

The SSN (significant support needs) students and staff are taking on a Holiday Project this season! We are collecting treats, toys and beds for the dogs at Freedom Service Dogs!

The dogs at Freedom Service Dogs are service dogs in training to support individuals with disabilities as well as individuals who are retired veterans. We are looking for donations of dog beds, dog treats and dog toys to give to this life long friend! The best part, we, the SSN program, are taking a field trip to Freedom Service Dogs in December so our students in the SSN program can meet these incredible dogs and give the dogs their gifts as well!

If you have NEW dog toys or beds and want to donate them please bring them down to the SSN room. Dog treat donations need to be unopened in order to safely give them to the dogs.

We are always accepting gently used dog beds and toys to donate to freedom service dogs :)

Thank you so much for your support!
