News from Steve

Dear Copper Mesa Community,

We have been teased with spring this week, which has been lovely, but it looks like some snow is headed our way this weekend!!

Our PRIDE Skill next week is: Task/Time Management

This week I will mention the following:

  • Visiting CME

  • Wear Red Tomorrow

  • Dancing Through The Decades

  • Spirit Rock

  • Wish Week

VISITING CME

We love having parents and other guests visit Copper Mesa. We just ask that when you come into our building you check in with the office first before heading to a classroom for a scheduled conference, to drop off a jacket, or for any reason. This does not apply to parents dropping or picking up their kiddos from BASE before 7:30 am or after 4:00 pm as you are buzzed in. Safety has been and always will be our number one priority! Thank you.

WEAR RED

Tomorrow is the American Heart Association National Wear RED day. Every student and staff member in our district is encouraged to wear RED tomorrow! This is a great kick-off to our annual American Heart Association Heart Challenge at CME. We usually reach our goal and I bet this year we will again. Your contribution to this worthwhile cause is greatly appreciated and helps Mr. Novak and your students because they give us money to purchase PE equipment!

DANCING THROUGH THE DECADES

Our sixth graders have been busy preparing their dances for the Dancing through the Decades assembly. This is always one of my favorite assemblies as our sixth graders do a wonderful job of representing the music of the decade they were assigned. I have enjoyed watching them practice this week. A huge shout-out to Ms. Mueller and Mr. Novak for working with the students. I do have to share that I had one staff member ask if I was going to dance to the 20s when I was around!! I am not that old!!

SPIRIT ROCK

I am giving a huge shout-out to all of you who have painted our Spirit Rock through the years. I have seen you painting in the snow, 100-degree weather and you have always done an amazing job with the painting and recognizing your kiddos!! I was watching a parent paint it the other day and I was wondering to myself how many layers of paint do we have on that rock?!?!

WISH WEEK

Next week begins Wish Week in the Mountain Vista feeder area. I am always proud to be a part of the Vista Feeder Wish Week as we have raised the most money for the organization for many years than any other feeder in the nation. We have historically been able to sponsor many additional kiddos' wishes! This year’s theme is Harry Potter! Each day next week we are encouraged to wear specific items. On Monday, we would love to see everyone either wearing their Wish Week shirt from last year or a white shirt. Other days will be detailed below.

Thank you,

Steve

CMAS INFORMATION -

It is that time of year again that we are starting to plan for CMAS (Colorado State Testing). If you are a 3rd-6th grade parent, please check out the CMAS Parent Communication Letter which outlines our building schedule for each grade level. If you have any questions, please email our AP Candice Laviaguerre at [email protected]. Thanks so much!

CogAT Screening

DCSD is committed to implementing equitable practices to increase access to advanced/gifted learning opportunities. Based on state and national recommendations and requirements, we implement Universal Screening for students in 2nd grade (February).

2nd Grade Universal Screen

As part of this process, ALL students in 2nd grade not identified for gifted programming will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) the week of February 5th, 2024. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.

If your child is already identified for gifted programming, they will not participate in this universal screen testing. Your Gifted Education Facilitator will contact you directly with information about this process.

Kindergarten/ 1st Grade Gifted Identification Referral Testing

  • If your child is in K or 1st grade and you believe he/she needs evaluation for Gifted Identification and Services, you may refer your child for testing by initiating the Gifted Identification Process.

  • Please reach out to Heather Stinnett

  • NOTE: Requesting this assessment automatically initiates the process to evaluate for Gifted Identification.

  • Please request CogAT testing for your child by completing the Referral for Gifted Identification linked here.

  • Upon receipt of this form the Gifted Education Facilitator

February COGAT Testing/Universal Screening. Please reach out to Heather Stinnett with any questions.
